When a food is in season it is much easier to get hold of, may be a little bit cheaper and the quality of the food item is better too. Each month we will let you know what food is in season and what to look out for next month to help you plan your menus.
Pears
Pears come in lots of different varieties, shapes and sizes. The sweetness of pears and texture also varies depending on where in the World it has come from and the type it is. Pears have lots of different uses in cooking. You can poach and bake them and they are even used in some drinks.
Carrots
The Wild carrot was first found in Asia and came in a variety of colours including yellow and purple. It is a member of the Parsley family, which includes parsnips, fennel and celery. It is a great source of Vitamin A and and can be eaten raw or cooked. You should choose well-coloured, firm carrots. The smaller ones are best as they take the least time to cook and are more tender.
Leeks
Leeks are part of the onion family and are a popular root vegetable in the UK. You should look for a bright, fresh coloured stem with dark leaves as these are at their freshest. Leeks are popular in soups and are delicious served with a roast dinner.
Oranges
Oranges are rich in Vitamin C and have a sweet or bitter taste. Oranges can be used in salads, cakes, marmalades and to create juices and smoothies. There are lots of different varieties all with their own distinctive tastes.
