We have created some top tips to help you and your child cook together. But we also want you to share your own cooking tips with us. You can send them to us by clicking on ‘submit a tip’ in section links, on the right.
Boiling milk
If you grease the edges of a pan with a little bit of fat then milk will not run over a pan while boiling.
5-a-day
Help your child get their 5-a-day by making juices and smoothies with fresh fruit. These taste delicious and children love them but they are also very healthy and good for you.
Sweetening food
Does your meal really need sugar adding or could you use sweeteners instead? Try and use sweeteners instead of sugar as it is a healthier option.
Eggs
Have you ever got your boiled eggs and unboiled eggs mixed up? There is a simple test you can do to tell them apart. Spin each egg on your work surface and then quickly stop it spinning. If it continues to spin once you let go, the egg is uncooked. If it doesn’t move then it is boiled.
Plan ahead
Plan your meals on a weekly basis and create a shopping list. It saves you having a panic in the early evening and grabbing something quick but unhealthy.
Whipping eggs
You can add a teaspoon of cold water to the white of an egg which will help you to whip it more quickly while increasing the quantity of the egg.
Cooking pastry
To stop pastry cases from rising when you cook them, prick the base with a fork before you put the filling in. Then put them in to cook.
Boiling cauliflower
When you are boiling cauliflower or potatoes add a few drops of vinegar to the water to keep their original white colour. You can also keep rice white when boiling it by adding a few drops of lemon juice
Removing lumps from gravy
If you have lumpy gravy simply run it through a sieve first. Use one with fine holes and the lumps will stay in the sieve.
Reducing smells in fridge
You can get rid of unpleasant smells in your fridge by chopping an onion in half and putting it on a shelf in your fridge. The natural antioxidants of an onion will make the bad smell disappear.
