Safety Tips

Mother helps her carve safely
Staying safe in the kitchen is so important for you and your child.  Each month we are going to give you a new safety tip. You should think of safety when storing, handling and preparing food so make sure you come back each month for more information.

This Month
February
Always fully defrost your food

When you are cooking food that has been frozen always check whether the food needs to be defrosted first or can be cooked from frozen.  The oven should be heated to the right temperature first.  If you are cooking from frozen check that the food is cooked right through before you and your family eat it.

If the food needs to be de-frosted first then make sure it is thawed (de-frosted fully) before you start cooking.  Thaw it on the bottom shelf of a fridge in a suitable container to hold any juices.  These juices may be contaminated so wash your hands after you have prepared it.  Don’t put raw food above any other food in the fridge as the juice could drip onto it and contaminate it.
