When a food is in season it is much easier to get hold of, may be a little bit cheaper and the quality of the food item is better too. Each month we will let you know what food is in season and what to look out for next month to help you plan your menus.
Figs
Figs are available in several different varieties. You will notice the skins vary in colour from a yellowy-green to a purple. Figs have a rich and sweet taste and can be eaten fresh or dried. It is fresh figs that are in season from September to November. They are delicious with cheese and ham.
Walnuts
There are lots of types of walnuts. The most common variety of walnuts that you will see are the dried ripe ones which will still be in their shell.
Half or whole nuts can be used as a decoration for desserts whilst chopped walnuts can add texture and flavour to them. For main courses you can use walnuts ground to make creamy soups, stuffings and sauces. Or add them to salads to give an extra crunch.
Grouse
The traditional grouse season runs until December but the birds are at their best in the first half of the season. Grouse taste best when they are roasted with bacon over the skin to stop them from drying out or you can use it to make games pies.
Mushrooms
This is the start of the mushroom season in Britain and it lasts until early winter. However certain types of mushrooms are in season in Spring. Some people are wary of eating mushrooms as certain types aren't good for you so always check the type you have found if you picked from the wild.
Watercress
A lot of the watercress that you will buy in this country is grown in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Devon but it is available throughout the country. It has a peppery leaf that can be served with salad, used with eggs to make omlettes or scrambled. You can also make watercress soup which can be served either hot or cold.
