The Egg Buying Guide

Eggs have so many uses in cooking, but with lots of different types and brands to choose from how do you know where to start.  Our simple guide to being eggs will help you understand and buy the best.

  • Buy your eggs from somewhere that regularly sells eggs and has a good turnover of them.  They should have been transported and stored at the right temperature (below 20°c)
  • Always check the best before date on the box.  Normally it is 3 weeks after the eggs were laids.  This is a good way of telling you how fresh the eggs are.
  • Before you go to the checkout open the box to check the eggs aren't damaged.
  • You will be able to choose from eggs that have been produced from different farming methods including organic, free range eggs, barn eggs etc.  Free range eggs are laid by hens that have easy access to open surroundings and have been fed a natural cereal diet.  This is a much more humane way of keeping hens and these type of eggs, along with organic, are recommended.
  • You may see the lion symbol on your boxes of eggs, this is a quality symbol.
  • There is no difference between white or brown eggs other than the colour. The nutritrional value and flavour will be the same.  It is the colour of the hens feathers that affects the colour of the egg.
