Are you looking for ways you could help the environment when making food choices? This month's top tips will help you to be more environmentally friendly.
- Food wastage is bad for the environment so try not to buy too much at once, just buy what you know you will need.
- If you do have food that needs to be thrown away why not compost it rather than put in your dustbin?
- Consider the miles your food has travelled to get to your home. Look at buying locally grown or sourced products.
- You could buy your fish from sustainable sources. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) provides assurance that the fish has come from a well-managed fishery. Look out for the MSC logo when buying fish.
- Buy fruit and vegetables that are in season as they are more likely to have been grown naturally rather than heated during production or transported a long way.
- Unprocessed or lightly processed food and drink will have used less energy in production.
- Drinking tap water is better for the environment than bottled water as it uses 300 times less energy to produce it.
